Malaysians Disappointed By Pale Nasi Lemak In US Cooking Show

Malaysians Disappointed By Pale Nasi Lemak In US Cooking Show

A US cooking channel’s version of Malaysia’s national dish has drawn criticism from viewers who say the nasi lemak in the clip looked nothing like the real thing. The footage appeared in a YouTube Shorts video by CookeddClips, a channel that ranks school lunches from several countries, The Sun YS reported. Both outlets covered the backlash on 23 September.

WeirdKaya added that the dish came in the familiar triangular packet, but the contents prompted a double take once it was unwrapped. Three large anchovies sat neatly lined up across the rice, beside plain-coloured peanuts and a small dollop of sambal, with pieces of chicken and half a boiled egg on the side.

The anchovies and peanuts drew most of the complaints. Malaysian viewers pointed out that ikan bilis should be sun-dried then deep-fried until crisp and golden, giving it the dark colour and crunch expected in the dish. The peanuts, they said, belong roasted, not pale. Questions also arose over the small amount of sambal and the variety used in the video.

Commenters did not hold back. One wrote that it was the palest nasi lemak seen in a lifetime, adding that Southeast Asia has several kinds of sambal, including the cooked variety that belongs in nasi lemak and an uncooked type shown in the clip. Another viewer, describing themselves as Singaporean, called the plate a disgrace to Malaysian brothers and sisters. Others joked that food commentator Uncle Roger should step in, and several urged the hosts to visit Malaysia to try the dish locally.

Suggestions on how to fix the plate filled the comment section as well. Beyond the fried anchovies and roasted peanuts, viewers asked for more sambal and a presentation closer to what is served in canteens and stalls in Malaysia.

The hosts themselves appeared to enjoy the meal, praising its simple flavours. They placed it in a solid B tier and ranked it third among the countries featured, alongside dishes from China and Indonesia.

Nasi lemak combines rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves, served with sambal, anchovies, peanuts, egg and cucumber, and is often wrapped in banana leaf. It is widely regarded as Malaysia’s national dish and appears daily in school canteens, mamak stalls and morning markets across the country.

Malaysian food has drawn attention overseas before, and presentations abroad often spark debate at home. In this case the criticism landed on a video that ended with a favourable ranking, a detail that sat behind the row over plating.
