Malaysians Advised To Postpone Non-Essential Travel To France

Malaysians Advised To Postpone Non-Essential Travel To France

Source: Penang Today

Malaysians planning a trip to France have been advised to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve, as demonstrations continue in several major French cities.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement on 18 Oct that it is monitoring the situation closely, and that no Malaysians have been reported involved in or affected by the unrest, NST reported. Travel to France remains unrestricted, the ministry said, but travellers are encouraged to weigh a delay until the situation eases.

The Embassy of Malaysia in Paris has issued a safety advisory urging Malaysians in France to exercise caution and stay alert, according to The Star. The embassy is in close contact with local authorities and stands ready to offer consular help if needed. Travellers have also been asked to follow updates issued by the embassy and by the French authorities.

Malaysians living in France have been asked to ensure the embassy holds their latest contact details. Those planning a trip who have not registered with the mission are encouraged to do so through the ministry’s e-Konsular platform at ekonsular.kln.gov.my. Registration lets the embassy reach a traveller quickly if an emergency develops, and it is also how the mission shares travel updates with citizens.

The demonstrations have drawn students, trade unions and community groups, and violence has flared in several cities, Astro Awani noted. France has a long record of mass protests. The Yellow Vests movement of 2018, which began over fuel prices and cost-of-living pressure, ran for months and at times turned violent.

An advisory of this kind stops short of a travel ban. Entry rules and visa arrangements are unchanged, and the decision on whether to travel rests with the individual. The ministry said its embassy in Paris is receiving updates from the local authorities and will pass on further information as the situation develops.

Malaysian missions abroad issue advisories when unrest breaks out in a host country. The Paris embassy serves Malaysians who live in France as well as those passing through, and it keeps a register of citizens it can reach when conditions change.

Malaysians in France who need consular help can call the Embassy of Malaysia in Paris at +33 1 45 53 11 85, or its after-hours emergency line at +33 6 32 44 65 71.
